With shared community knowledge and advice from sector experts, we can troubleshoot problems and overcome challenges together.
Parent Detectives is a six-part Zoom workshop course introduced by expert therapists, legal advisors and parents who are navigating the education system. The sessions focus on understanding a child’s profile of strength and need, their education rights, and how to support them through transitions starting from primary to secondary education and, ultimately, into work.
How Parent Detectives works:
The six-part course takes place annually, live, over a number of weeks from October to December. Each session is online, and approximately an hour and a half so participants can ask questions of experts.

Session One: Introduction
Learn how careful observation and ‘detective work’ in the classroom at primary school can help us plan pupil passports to support the transition into secondary school and set up learning for life.
Understand the impact of a child’s individual cognitive, sensory, social and communication profile on their educational and future path. Learn which reports can help provide evidence of need and support strategies. A workshop recording is available using our contact form throughout the year. Session Two: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND SEEING STARS

Session Three: Revealing communication, speech and language reports, how they can help us
Subtle, hidden difficulties with communication are often missed or misinterpreted at Primary School. This can lead to ‘snowballing’ of poor educational, social and emotional outcomes. Once understood, strategies to support the child can be a ‘tweak of good practice’ (Communications Trust). A workshop recording is available using our contact form throughout the year. Session Four: What is it with this child? EP Reports, How can they help us?
An EP (Educational Psychologist’s) careful observation and analysis of a child’s learning profile can help the pupil, parents and teachers understand then implement strategies for learning- strategies that will become key for further education and employment.
Research shows that only 2% of employers ask about inclusion strategies, so the onus is on us to help children learn to explain their talents and describe the reasonable adjustments that will support them through life

“The Parent Detective sessions were excellent – we had speech and language and occupational therapy experts, a parent who had gone through what we were experiencing, a lawyer to introduce us to special educational needs rights. Action-attainment gave us the knowledge and confidence to fully support our son, and for that we will always be grateful,”
