'Fun in the Sun' Summer Sport from Action-attainment & Brentford FC CST
Kayaking, Paddleboards and Ball Sports - during the last three summers we have arranged sessions for young people and their families in July and August. Successful fundraising in 2016 meant we could repeat this popular programme. For the first time 2016's programme included an introduction to golf for young adults on 1st and 2nd August. We also offered ball skills activities to children aged 5-11 with their siblings and parents.
Fun in the Sun enables small groups of between four to eight young people to work with supportive coaches and enjoy positive sporting experiences. The teaching is adapted to help the participants' communication needs.
In 2016 water based activities were arranged for young people aged between 12 and 25 at Brentford Lock between 2-4pm on 25, 27 and 29th July. This year, for the first time, families with children aged 8+ tried out paddleboards and kayaks on Brentford Canal with instruction from four experienced watersports coaches from BFCCST.
Ball sports were held at Rocks Lane Tennis Football centre in Barnes on 26th and 28th July. Activities for young adults ran between 10am and 3pm including skills development for football, tennis, rounders and cricket. For the first time Ball Skills sessions were open to children aged 5-11 on the mornings of 26th and 28th July. Most of the children participating had enjoyed On the Ball sessions with their parents during the Summer term, building their confidence to come along to a Summer Camp. The groups are set to reflect ability and age aiming for positive experiences of Spot. Links between Action-attainment and specialists Knots Arts meant that many families followed the morning of exercise with an afternoon of creative activities for the 5-11 age group. Knots Arts were based at the Old Sorting Office, Barnes Green, a short walking distance from our base, Rocks Lane Tennis Football centre. This provided a full day of family fun. Fun in the Sun has been sponsored by Three Guineas Trust, since 2014, Families support the activities with payments to Brentford FCCST which may come from Disability Living Allowances or Direct Payments.
“Building physical strength and confidence, an opportunity for social interaction and friendships in a structured activity. This benefits the whole family over a long Summer holiday."
